Sylvia's House honors the life and legacy of Sylvia Rodriguez, a dedicated community activist, social worker, and interpreter who tirelessly served Buffalo’s vulnerable populations. Born in Puerto Rico, Sylvia moved to Buffalo in 1951 and worked diligently to uplift her community. Known affectionately as "Abuela," she worked as a social worker and interpreter for the International Institute and the courts for nearly two decades. Her compassion extended beyond her official roles, working with organizations like the Father Belle Center, Los Tainos, and the Salvation Army, where she continued serving until her passing. She was a liaison to woman's and children's hospital , working with families from Puerto Rico whose children who were having open heart surgery's. She would translate for them , house them in her home ,cook for them and take them to their appointments.
Sylvia was an advocate for equitable access to services, co-founding the Pucho Olivencia Center and serving on the boards of the Hispanic Woman's League, Erie County Senior Services, and the United Way. Her efforts earned her numerous accolades, including the Community Service Award from Hispanics United and the Healthy Start Award from the Buffalo Prenatal-Perinatal Task Force. Sylvia’s legacy is one of unwavering dedication to her community, making her the perfect namesake for a shelter that embodies her spirit of service, compassion, and advocacy for those in need.
