Homelessness in Buffalo, NY, has seen a persistent rise, with approximately 5,000 individuals experiencing homelessness annually in Erie County. Of these, about 1,000 are chronically homeless, facing long-term housing instability. The city’s shelters frequently operate at or near capacity, especially during the winter months, when temperatures plummet and the need for emergency housing spikes. In 2022 alone, over 400 families, including more than 1,200 children, sought shelter services.
Affordable housing remains a pressing issue, with Buffalo's vacancy rates for low-income units hovering around 2%, making it difficult for those with limited income to secure permanent homes. Additionally, mental health and substance abuse challenges contribute to homelessness in the city, with around 30% of the homeless population struggling with these issues. Despite these alarming figures, community organizations and shelters are working tirelessly to provide resources and advocate for sustainable solutions to this ongoing crisis.
